Finland International School Thane

Who We Are

Finnish National Core Curriculum is at the heart of our operations and starting point for all we do. The main language of instruction is English, but because we value languages as a key to culture, our students have the opportunity to study Hindi, Marathi, and other languages.

In addition to teaching academic skills and content, we focus on assuring our students are equipped with competences to apply knowledge in life, with whatever it holds.

Following the Finnish way, our pedagogy enables academic and intellectual development while nurturing mental and physical well-being. We promote unique, balanced, and holistic learning experiences from early years onwards. We believe learning is a process that doesn’t only happen in the classro oms. It is a continuous process built on a spiral structure where new knowledge is learned through real-life experiences together with others.

Our teaching promotes student-centred approach complimented by a comprehensive support system, which ensures that everyone has the opportunity to succeed. Every student is supported on their own learning path through a variety of hands-on methods that are motivating and age appropriate. We expect and encourage our students to engage in and take charge of their own learning process. Students learn how to develop, direct, and evaluate their learning. They also gain cognitive and life skills that help them navigate everyday challenges throughout life.

As school should prepare students for life and life is a holistic phenomenon, we provide our students with opportunities to explore the  world through phenomenon-based learning. Using an inter-disciplinary approach with cross-curricular themes allow our students to view the world through a wider lens.

We have an online admissions process.

To start the year, the teachers prepare a Personal Learning Plan (PLP) for each student. The PLP gives a holistic overview of a student’s strengths and weaknesses and sets objectives and tools for students, parents, and staff. The objectives in the PLP come from the school curriculum. The PLP is reviewed  for every term. Students  receive a report card at the end of both terms. Prior to end of term, parents have the opportunity to meet teachers in a Parent-Teacher Conference or a Student-Led Conference.

In early education (Grades 0-2), evaluation is written and descriptive. Starting from Grade 3, student assessment follows a numeric scale of 4-10 (4 being fail and 10 being excellent) accompanied by a descriptive text.

Students are taught to reflect their own work and behaviour and to use peer- and self evaluation as part of the daily routines and group activities to construct stronger and a more realistic self-image.Continuous formative assessment through varied sources is the most important way to collect data about student progress. It gives the teacher realistic and up-to-date information about the student’s academic level, working skills, and behaviour.

All school fees are non-refundable, and they need to be paid by the start of each academic term.

We believe that bringing up children is a collaborative task and willingly share responsibilities with parents. Communication and collaboration between the school and parents must be respectful. We welcome parents to join the parents’ association as well as contribute to our learning community in ways agreed with the staff.

Library is a learning environment available for the students to read, study, research, and do projects alone and in groups utilising the modern technology. Students may borrow books for a specified time. We want our students to be able study in a positive learning environment. We focus on creating a supportive and caring atmosphere. The school has zero tolerance to bullying. We recognize that not everyone can be best friends but teach our students to be able to work with everyone.

And in a similar way we expect our parents also to be reasonably careful while addressing and discussing any issues with school authorities Use of social media or any common platform for spreading false/incorrect information  and use appropriate language will invite strict disciplinary action, under the cyber laws of the country

We value and promote physical activity throughout the school days, during both lessons and breaks. We encourage creative play, practicing social skills through sports activities, and releasing excess energy to better concentrate during lessons. We offer PE as part of the curriculum; students can also enjoy different sports as an integral part of their daily routine.

Food is fuel for the brain. The vegetarian meals are included in the fees and are tasty, nutritious, and according to health recommendations. The beauty is that the students get a chance to decide their menu

There is a bus service available for the FIS students. All buses have seat belts and a digital tracking system as well as a bus monitor onboard to take care of the students.

We have an online admissions process.
